Steve is a native New Yorker who has been practicing law in Chicago, Illinois for nearly 25 years. Steve received his Bachelor of Arts from Beloit College in 1975 and his Juris Doctorate from Northwestern University School of Law in 1979. Steve is admitted to practice in Illinois and numerous federal trial and appellate courts throughout the country.

Steve began his law practice at the Chicago-based law firm of Sachnoff and Weaver, Ltd., where he became a partner in 1983. Throughout Steve's career, he has represented clients in complex litigation involving shareholder rights, corporate control claims, securities fraud, and breach of fiduciary duty. In 1995, Steve also began to represent whistleblowers in qui tam actions.

In 2001, Steve founded Cohen Law Group so that he could dedicate his practice to qui tam and class action litigation. Steve represents relators in qui tam cases spanning the spectrum of fraud and abuse. Steve was also lead counsel in Reppine ex rel. University of Chicago Hospitals (N.D. Ill. 1999) that resulted in one of the largest recoveries against a teaching hospital for Medicare and Medicaid billing fraud.

In his class action practice, Steve represents public and private shareholders in corporate, securities, financial institution and accounting fraud litigation as well as consumers in consumer fraud and deceptive trade practices litigation. Most recently, Steve was co-lead counsel for the plaintiffs in a class action against Bank One that resulted in a twelve million dollar recovery for the class members, Lowenthal v. Bank One Corp.

Steve's interest in consumer protection work started back in the 1980's, when he served as Legislative Director and Counsel to Representative Benjamin Rosenthal of New York. During his tenure on Capitol Hill, Steve worked on numerous consumer protection legislative initiatives and coordinated oversight hearings on government waste and abuse issues.

Steve is an adjunct faculty member at Northwestern Law School in Chicago where he teaches clinical trial advocacy and is also on the faculty of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA). Steve is a member of Taxpayers Against Fraud, the national association of qui tam relator's counsel, as well as the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Decalogue Society, and the Chicago Council of Lawyers.
